What is the difference between a D.O. and an M.D.? Since most people understand what an M.D. (medical doctor) is, here are some of the basics about D.O.s and how they compare to M.D.s:
A D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic medicine) learns about all of the same medicines and procedures that an M.D. does, but there is a historical emphasis on treatment of the whole person rather than just treating symptoms.
The D.O. also learns Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment which is a set of hands-on diagnostic procedures and treatments that are designed to mechanically restore the proper function of body organs and tissues.1
At New Medical Health Care all of our physicians are D.O.s; many practice OMT for assessment and treatment purposes. More importantly, we all believe very strongly in a holistic approach to medicine. We want to do more than just treat illness and injury; we want to help you get well, stay well and live a healthier life.
